Alonso carried his Renault to third place in Singapore. After Vettel and Rosberg wrecked their own races, he seized a podium from a car that did not deserve it.

That is the difference between the great and the merely good.

    Martin Brundle (Sing '09)

"Alonso has been brilliant all weekend, absolutely brilliant". "A driver not always easyto love, but very easy to admire".

"I saw a rash and they could have come in, I should have come in," said Hamilton.

"I think we have a rule that the guy in front gets the preference to pit first, I think that will be why."

Hamilton also talked more about his vision issue in the closing stages.

"I had quite a bit of wind coming in, I got close to Nico at one stage and I got some debris or dirt in my eye," he added.

"I was driving with one eye, which is virtually impossible to do. Through low speed corners I had to close the eye, which made it worse, but with five laps to go it cleared up and I was able to stay ahead of Daniel.

"I drove with all heart and drove fairly all weekend. I leave today quite happy and go in to the next race with even more energy and a new determination."

"I tried to attack him and wanted to win if I could, but I have to accept that I am in my rookie season and he has number one on his car and I have number two. I am the second driver and so I must accept that and respect that for the team."

    Surtees on the Monaco GP

By John Surtees on 28 May 2014 @HSF_Foundation

    Share this:

I have no doubt about Lewis Hamilton’s driving ability, but I didn’t like what I saw and heard from Monaco. I can understand the frustration that Lewis must have felt in not having that opportunity on the last lap of qualifying to get pole. But I think his reaction to his team-mate and team was wrong.
Considering the speed that Nico Rosberg had been able to exit Casino, and the way the road down to Mirabeau moves the car around, and the fact that having decided to abort the corner he went to the end of the slip road, I would have given him the benefit of the doubt.
Lewis had said earlier that he had more motivation than Nico to win the World Championship because of his upbringing in a flat in Stevenage, where incidentally I used to lodge when starting my career racing the Norton, as against Nico growing up in Monaco.

If Nico wasn’t already inspired to win his first World Championship then Lewis certainly would have provided some material for him to dig even deeper. I know they have the experience of Niki Lauda in the team, but perhaps Ross Brawn is being missed.
I was sorry to see Sebastian Vettel suffering with car problems both in qualifying and the race. Obviously both Red Bull and, in particular, Renault have some work to do. But it will be interesting to see when it comes right. In the meantime you cannot but applaud the Mercedes team that has prepared itself so very well for this year and presented a degree of performance and reliability that is reminiscent of the years of Fangio and Moss in the Silver Arrows.
    Sounds from the past

A lot has been said about sound of the modern Formula 1 car. Edenbridge last Monday stepped back in time where many spectators had the opportunity of hearing my 158 Ferrari from 1964, the Surtees TS7 DFV Cosworth and Surtees TS14 DFV Cosworth together with the 4-cylinder MV Agusta and my single-cylinder Vincent Grey Flash.

What 2014 holds in store for Surtees

All were driven and ridden for two laps of the town centre. I must say that even I was quite surprised by how loud the 158 was! But to enthusiasts perhaps music to the ears.
